How long should it take to recalibrate a battery

I bought a new battery for my laptop earlier this year and it is not showing that it is charging properly. So I decided to recalibrate the battery but after 13 hours nothing happened so I cancelled the recalibration. Is this normal? Can a battery "die" in one year? My last battery lasted 4 years. The laptop is five years old. What should I do?
